CEO Gavin Marshall Makes Mortgage Global 100 List

We’re proud to announce that our CEO and founder, Gavin Marshall, has been included in the inaugural Mortgage Global 100 List. Canadian Mortgage Professional, Mortgage Professional America, Mortgage Professional Australia and the New Zealand Adviser compiled this list after combing through hundreds of the biggest names in the industry.

The Mortgage Global 100 List recognizes mortgage industry leaders who are shaping today’s market by making incredible advancements at their own companies, taking associations to new heights, providing education to drive the industry forward and championing key issues that will carry our industry into the new decade. It shines a spotlight on outstanding professionals who are making a positive difference and helping drive change across the industry.

Gavin Marshall founded Magenta in 1994 and is the company’s chief executive officer. In 2019, CMP Magazine awarded Magenta Top Alternative Lender of the Year. Marshall holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Trent University. He holds an MBA degree, with a specialization in finance, from Queen’s University. After graduation, Marshall held progressively more senior positions in the areas of credit and mortgage underwriting. He had successfully invested in mortgages for his own account for many years, prior to the establishment of Magenta. Marshall is the Chairman of Trent University’s Philanthropic Advisory Council.

Magenta Turns 25

This year Magenta celebrates its 25th anniversary. We want to say thank you to all the investors, brokers and borrowers we have had the pleasure of working with since opening our doors in 1994.

Before we became one of Canada’s largest mortgage investment corporations, Magenta had its humble origins in the home basement of our CEO and founder Gavin Marshall in Perth, Ontario. Our first official company purchase was a used office chair, and our first employee was hired eight years later.

From the start, Magenta has focused on one thing above all else. That’s providing excellent service for our investor, broker and borrower partners. Putting these relationships at the heart of Magenta has been key to our success: We’ve grown from $4 million in assets under management at the time our first employee was hired in 2002, to over $300 million AUM and 35 employees today.

Director of Operations Alex Marshall Named Rising Star

Magenta is proud to announce that Canadian Mortgage Professional magazine named our Director of Operations, Alex Marshall, a Rising Star.

This award is given to 50 of the mortgage industry’s most promising young professionals from across Canada. In particular, CMP acknowledged the ability of recipients to adapt to the challenges of 2020.

In naming him a Rising Star, CMP recognized Alex Marshall for his “five years building [Magenta’s] operational and analytical capabilities”. His recent “digital transformation projects [designed] to meet the changing needs of brokers, borrowers and investors” were also highlighted.

“I am hopeful that the industry understands that digital solutions are not meant to entirely replace physical ones. Rather, digital solutions should mirror or complement physical ones to provide clients with a variety of pathways towards financing,” he says.

Alex Marshall is a recent graduate of the MBA program at the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University. He is also a recipient of the Tom Burns MBA Prize in International Business. Marshall emphasizes the importance of looking outside the industry for inspiration. “It is often the case where innovation in one industry can be translated to another,” he says, “but it’s impossible to apply these innovations if you simply aren’t aware of them”.
